How to Play Padel Tennis –
A Simple Guide to Official Rules & Gameplay

Padel Basic Rules & Helpful Tips

  • SERVE

Players get 2 serve attempts. Diagonally across the court.

Must be underhand & bounce once before contact.

The serve must bounce within the opponent's service box.

     Servers alternate after each game.

  • SCORING

     Uses tennis-style scoring (15, 30, 40, game).

     Matches are typically best-of-three sets.

Set is won by the first team to reach six games (e.g., 6-4)

Tiebreaker (first to 7 points) is played if the set reaches 6-6.

  • BALL IN PLAY

Players can hit the ball directly over the net or allow it to bounce off walls after the initial bounce.

The ball cannot bounce twice on the ground.

A ball that directly hits the walls or fence on your opponent’s side without first bouncing on the ground is considered "out" and results in losing the point.

Padel Court Layout & Essential Gameplay Strategy

  • A padel court is enclosed by glass and fencing, integral to the game strategy:

    • Dimensions: Standard size is 20 meters by 10 meters.

    • Walls: Balls can bounce off walls after hitting the ground once, extending rallies and adding excitement.

    • Service Lines and Boxes: Marked clearly on both sides, similar to tennis.

  • To quickly improve in padel, beginners should focus on these key skills:

    • Positioning & Movement:
Stay slightly back to anticipate wall rebounds. Good court coverage enhances teamwork and shot selection.

    • Effective Serving:
Keep serves low and precise to limit opponent returns.

    • Volley and Wall Shots:
Utilize walls strategically. Practice timing and angle control for successful returns.

  • Padel encourages sportsmanship, camaraderie, and respect among players. Follow these etiquette tips to ensure enjoyable matches:

    • Clearly call balls in or out.

    • Respect opponent space; avoid crowding during serves.

    • Do not step over the line when serving until you’ve made contact with the ball.
